. . . Or is it Just Me?

source
I think I'm high maintenance. There are many times that I want to visit a friend's house and write quietly while the kids sleep for the night. Where we can read our passages and laugh at our characters' antics or bounce ideas off of each other or work through a tangle of writers block.

It would be awfully nice to critique with this person and even daydream about the settings we've created.

I've longed for a friend who takes writing seriously enough that she wouldn't cancel out because it's only me and her showing up to a meeting, but who would make the most with every quiet moment for writing.

How freeing would it be to find someone who shares the passion of writing just a equally as you who would need you just as much as you need her?  Imagine the far places you'd travel with this kind of support!

Is this something that every writer wants, or is it just me?

  1. I think that everyone writer or not needs that kind of support. I am lucky enough to have found a writer friend that is close enough for us to get together once a week to talk writing. Have faith, you will find that person.

  2. One thing I love about the internet is that I've made many, many writer friends who will read my work and let me read theirs, and then go back and forth in e-mailed discussion.

I've also found neighbors who like reading and would read my work and then sit and talk with me afterward.

But to live close to someone who is writing with my same passion and drive, and who has a manuscript I can be thrilled about working with just as much as my own, that would be simply amazing. Person, where are you?

This, I think, is one reason why I cough up the money for writer's workshops--so I can hang out with writer people in person.

  3. I guess I never thought about this much. When I got serious about writing, ten years ago, I went to Clarion West and I've thus had this ever since. From there I got into Critical Mass, the writer's group I attended in New Mexico, and then I got to join up with you guys here in the Cove :-) One way to build up a social group like this is to attend science fiction conventions - that's where the bonds I have to a lot of writers in my generation solidified. Once you've eaten cold pizza with a person at 4am, you'll never be strangers.

  4. My bestie writer buddy lives in 5 hours away, so we don't get to always be physically together - although we spend a week holed up in a hotel at a writer's retreat together. Bliss.

But as fun as that was, it's my online and local crit group writer friends that sustain me. Even if we can't share a cup of tea, we share our thoughts and feelings - the part that counts!

  5. It took me almost ten years to find those somebodies. In 1999, after attending a mainstream writers group some distance away, I broke off and started a writers group in my little area. Many people came and went over the years, but that's how I found our little group of four dedicated, excellent writers. We meet once a week and I feel like I've found a piece of writer's paradise. Don't worry. Hang in there and you'll find that person/s. (I agree about writer's conferences, though. It's a great way to meet people who are as excited about writing as you are, and are looking for writing buddies, too.) I wish you the best!

  7. Writing buddies are the best. They know your brain inside and out--and they still love you. What could be better?

  8. WHAT AM I THINKING! I forgot my very own cabin girl. She writes for hours on end every chance she gets, she reads twice as many books as I do, we love eachother's stories, she lives right here in my house. What could be better?

If only we didn't have to share a computer.

  9. Pam, I'm hanging in there! I've been searching for a few good years now and have thrown in some lines for my quest. ;)

Rebecca, everyone sounds interested in such a thing, but they seem to shy away when I invite them. :/

Emily, ahhh, that sounds like heaven! <3

Susan, oh, how nice is that! I've tried a long distance buddy thing, but she got way too busy and now I'm alone. *le sigh*

Jonene, I've been mulling over the idea of creating my own system--but I would need like for like, you know? I know, I'm such a diva. Ugh...

Leisha, yes, that would be so fantastic!!!

Rebecca--LOL! Sharing a computer would be difficult! Maybe a Christmas computer is in order? ;)

  11. Well, Elizabeth, we do have a deal that the cabin girl gets her own netbook if she has straight A's for a semester.

I am totally on her case for her to get all her homework done.
